What Essential Foundations assesses
The framework assesses your Board across all four domains, focused on the foundations every NFP must have in place.
Structural - Legal Compliance
- Board composition: are the right roles in place, are they clearly defined, is there a skills profile, and is recruitment transparent?
- Governing instruments: constitution, code of conduct, financial policies, conflict of interest policy, privacy policy, WHS policy, risk management framework, volunteer policy, child safe policy, police check policy, and other mandatory documents.
- Roles and responsibilities: documented role clarity, a Board charter or equivalent, and a delegations instrument.
Human Resources - Board Compliance and Efficiency
- Capability and continuity: self-review cadence, induction process, register of interests, and meeting preparation.
- Compliance and integrity: ASIC/ACNC banned register checks, police checks, Working with Children checks, and NDIS screening where required.
- Effective meetings and financial oversight: meeting frequency, agenda preparation, minutes, CEO reporting and relationship, budget approval, financial reporting, and solvency declarations.
Political - Board Effectiveness
- Stakeholder engagement: whether the Board understands key stakeholders, builds relationships, creates trust, and keeps governance documents accessible.
- Accountability and transparency: decision-making inclusion, handling of dissent, conflict resolution, collaboration, and Board communications.
- Financial competence: budget approval processes, financial reporting, financial literacy, and solvency.
Symbolic - Culture and Strategy
- Mission: whether the organisation's core purpose is clearly documented and publicly available.
- Culture: whether the organisation's culture is intentional and documented, and whether the Board models its stated culture.
